Joseph R. Brown collection, 1729-1992.

The Joseph R. Brown collection contains both original and reproduced material, with an emphasis on the latter. The collection is divided into various subject areas including accounts of the Brown family; stories and biographical accounts about him and his family; his interests, careers, and business ventures including his attempts at townsite development and his political career; his relationships with Native Americans; his transportation ventures including the development of several "steamwagons"; his writings; and biographical material about some of his contemporaries--friends, foes, partners, and proteges. The collection includes genealogies and family charts for Brown's extended family, plus family memoirs and letters, obituaries, marriage records, and researchers' notes. The collection also include wills and other estate papers, court cases, land records, settlements, and other legal and family documents related to the Brown family. The collection includes published and unpublished accounts of his life including newspaper articles, memorials, character sketches, reminiscences, and biographical accounts by historians. There are also accounts of Brown in fiction including extracts from novels, short stories, poetry, radio playlets, and other plays. The collection also contains service records, orders and reports documenting his military career, and clippings, articles, reminiscences describing his careers. The collection contains material highlighting Brown's relationships with Native Americans, his role in various treaties, the capture of Brown's family during the Minnesota Uprising, the Indian scouts Brown formed in 1864, and his son Samuel J. Brown's service as a scout. The collection contains information on Brown's transportation schemes including drawings, articles, and contemporary accounts relating to Brown's "steamwagons," as well as correspondence, advertising materials, maps and biographical information about people Brown knew and worked with.
